(Frequently asked questions)

What is hand-shadow puppetry—often known in Europe as "Chinese shadows"—and where did this art form originate?

It is an ancient storytelling art form based on the use of shadows; while rooted in the East, it underwent significant development and a modern evolution in Europe from the 19th century onwards, marked by continuous innovation.
A shadow performance like the one presented by Carlo Truzzi and Simona is specifically designed for adult audiences, fostering deep spectator engagement and conveying a wide range of emotions—from the poetic to the ironic and the comic.
Simona and Carlo Truzzi have completely reinvented and modernized this art of hand-shadow puppetry, making it highly contemporary and captivating.
The term “Chinese shadows” refers only to its ancient origins; in today’s performances, the terms most commonly used are “Hand Shadow Show” or “Shadowgraphy.”

Are there modern hand-shadow shows (Shadowgraphy)?

For 30 years, Carlo Truzzi and Simona have uniquely and originally reinvented this art form in their shows. They were the very first to create highly original silhouettes using only their hands—depicting figures such as Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Albert Einstein, and Steve Jobs, to name just a few of the dozens of characters recreated using the shadows cast solely by their fingers.

How is a Shadow Show produced?

Technically, the basic materials required to stage the Shadow Show are few and essential:

– a projector (artists always provide the projector for small, medium, and large screens; however, massive projections onto buildings require projectors rented locally for the occasion).

– a screen sized according to the number of spectators present.

– a sound system for playing music, appropriate for the performance venue (hall, theater, or outdoor square).

How many people are involved in the performance?

Carlo Truzzi and Simona present their Shadow Show together, magically working in tandem to create silhouettes of famous and instantly recognizable figures.

An audio and lighting technician is required at the performance venue to handle the sound and operate the lights.

Is it possible to customize a shadow show?

Partial customization of the show is possible through the creation of shadow silhouettes that are particularly significant and widely recognized by the audience—such as, for example, the president of the company for which the performance is being staged.
